Downloading the software

As already indicated in the introduction, in this manual we use the open source software packages R and OpenOffice.org Calc. This chapter explains how to download these software packages.

Downloading R

1. Type in the URL www.r-project.org;
2. On the left side of the website (under the R logo ) you find the the bold text Download, Packages the link CRAN, click on this;
3. The CRAN Mirrors page appears. Search for your country, in my case, The Netherlands. Click on one of the mirrors you see, it does not matter which mirror you choose. In this manual there has been chosen for the Utrecht University mirror;
4. The window The Comprehensive R Archive Network appears. At the window Download and install R, choose the operating system you are using.

Downloading R for Windows:

At the window Download and install R click on Download R for Windows. At the page R for Windows choose for base and install R for the first time. The page R-2.152 (or another version) for Windows (32/64bit ) appears. Click on Download R 2.15.2 for Windows. Click on open R.2.15.2.exe, OK. If you have performed these steps, the file R - 2.15.2 - win.exe appears in your Downloads folder.

Downloading R for Mac OS:

At the window Download and install R click on Download R for MacOS X. At the page R for Mac OS X page under the Files section choose for R-2.15.2.pkg (latest version).
At the window R.2.15.2.pkg click on OK.
When you have completed these steps, the file R-2.15.2.pkg appears in your Downloads folder. Open this file by installing the software on your system. The simple steps that you have to perform could be readed from the screen.

Downloading Openoffice.org Calc

1. Type in the URL www.openoffice.org/download/other.html. A large table where you can choose different languages ​​and platforms for downloading OpenOffice appears;
2. Choose your preferred language at the table, also choose your operating system (Windows or Mac OS X) by clicking on the Download button;
3. A new page will open. At the top of the page that you should wait a few seconds before your download appears;
4. The window to open/download OpenOffice appears. Choose your desired settings and click OK;
5. If you have performed these steps Apache_OpenOffice_incubating_ version * name * _ * platform * file name appears in _install_... in the directory where your browser downloads arrive. Click on this file. By looking at the information at the different windows, you could choose your preferences and install OpenOffice on your system.
